As a creative soul, most of my work life has been in the entertainment industry. I have spruiked, been a clown, ushered, dressed up in a “LYCRA” green frog suit for 8am at Town Hall, milked cows, been a wig stylist, vintage clothing restorer, made props for film and TV, had an art gallery and created commercial displays. I’ve had my own Vintage Fabrics Boutique, studio warehouse. I’ve been collecting vintage clothing since I was 14 and sewing since I was 8.

Most recently, I have been hosting large fashion events and parades quite successfully to promote Australian Fashion Designers and have been developing my own label “Boutio Studio” (Boutique/Studio) BOO-T-O. A vintage-inspired custom made label specialising in statement pieces for the authentic self.

I am the entrepreneur’s entrepreneur. I market, promote and can sell ice to the eskimos.

……AND…..Why me? I am an interesting person, with a story or two to tell, and the pictures to back it up! I’m the unearthed hidden talent with an abundance of potential, maybe the next big thing.  I design and create outstanding and beautiful, individual statement pieces and I have a one-track vision to provide opportunities for myself and new, emerging designers.

From humble beginnings, as an ordinary Bondi Girl, she had the determination to reach the top. She made her first dress at nine, and at just sixteen opened her first shop.

Beril’s extraordinary talent soon attracted everyone around her, from hard-working street girls through to nobility. There were theatre stars and socialites , beautiful women from the racing world, wives and girlfriends of gangland bosses, and even some of Australia’s most notorious prostitutes.

Having made her name while still in her teens, Beril found herself being courted by the establishment – the Horderns, the Fairfaxes, the Maccarthur-Onslows and many, many more.

As her fame spread, her clientele included great international stars like Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Dame Margot Fonteyn, Eartha Kitt, Winfred Atwell and Bo Derek, to name but a few.

A designer of great creativity, she masterminded costumes for major stage productions, working with such theatre luminaries as Robert Morley and Sir Robert Helpmann.

Her own fashion parades are legendary: huge, elaborate productions with big music and dance numbers on a scale not seen in this country before – or since.

Then at the pinnacle of her success, Beril lost everything – her workrooms, her business, her home.

But in her typical fashion, Beril Jents has bounced back – her book Little Ol’ Beryl From Bondi tells her life story in a thoroughly entertaining way.

Beril jents was born Beryl Strudwick. On her first marriage, she became Beryl Gent, but shortly after changed her name to Beril (with an I) and Jents (with a ‘J” and an ‘s’ on the end), for aesthetic reasons. Through remarried, to Peter Carey she retains the name Beril Jents professionally.

With a grandmother who was a hoarder and a father who was an antique collector – collecting seems to be in the blood. I love the simplicity in the patterns of vintage clothing teamed with the textures, craft applications, such as beading and the obvious elegant glamour of being such a “lady” in decades gone by.

Boutio Studio – the ultimate in vintage

Boutio Studio designer Helen Sattler has been working with vintage fabrics and materials for over 15 years building up an impressive collection. In addition to designing vintage couture and collecting fabrics and restoring vintage clothes, she also revamps your soul with one-off personal designs for special clients.

For Sydney designer Helen Sattler acquiring the eye for vintage fabrics and couture comes naturally, having been born to a father who was a passionate collector. “As a child our garage and house was a delightful place of discovery, always finding something that was intriguing,” she said.

Helen’s collection of vintage fabrics includes 1950’s Italian frosted satins, Guipure’s, Swiss nets Joan Kessler cotton, French silk chiffon as well as silk velvet.

Being surrounded by the nostalgic atmosphere as a child and her array of exquisite vintage fabrics, is the inspiration for all Helen’s creations. As a self-taught designer, Helen aims to create masterpieces that are not for mannequins but for the true authentic self. Outfits that flatter not just your figure but your soul and personality.

Helen is inspired to keep the tradition of sewing as a craft alive, a tradition that was always part of life, passed down from mother to daughter.

Helen’s limitless vision has lead Boutio Studio to become a centre for creative expression and education in the community. In an effort to share her experiences and knowledge, Helen also offers sewing tuition as well as a work experience program for young girls interested in a career in fashion.

Helen is progressive and dynamic, always seeking to explore new and exciting possibilities. Some of the initiatives planned for and by Boutio Studio over the coming year include a national marketing campaign for f.rock fashion, as part of her mission to promote Australia’s  emerging designers.

INTA – VINTAGE

With the close of the Vintage Studio in Manly Vale, Boutio last month has left vintage fashion-ites at a loss to where to get their vintage this side of town.

With the ever increasing popularity in vintage clothing, two local business “Boutio Studio” and “Garden St Bazaar” have pooled their resources and created an outlet to have good quality vintage available on the Northern Beaches.

Helen Sattler, director of Boutio Studio (still located in Fairlight) and founder of f.rock fashion, the northern beaches largest fashion extravaganza says, “ I had to let go of my studio to make way for f.rock this year, as the plans for f.rock are just bigger then I ever expected”.

The GRAND OPENING for the new upstairs ladies vintage boudoir opens its doors this Saturday and Sunday 10am – 5pm at Garden St Bazaar.

It’s every girl’s fantasy dressing room – chandeliers, Persian carpets, put your feet up on the ornate Balinese lounge, listen to a bit of jazz under the soft mood lighting whilst your scouring the racks, shelves and delicious displays of vintage clothing, hats, gloves, lingerie, shoes and bags.

Helen opened her Boutio studio to the public in October 2006 in Narrabeen with a new and exciting vintage couture house, specializing in traditional and vintage fabric from across the globe.

Helen has both a passion and a gift to transform an individuals fantasy into reality and have that individual shine as who they really are.
